A terrible bus accident has occurred in Doda district of Jammy and Kashmir. Around 55 tourists are said to be on board the bus. 36 passengers lost their lives and around 19 were seriously injured in the accident. According to the official information, the bus going from Kishtwar to Jammu fell downhill in a 250-meter-deep ditch. Police says, the accident might have been taken place due to the overtake. Despite of festive season, police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and locals had immediately started the rescue operation.

According to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Jammu and Kashmir ranked second across India in the number of road accidents per 10,000 vehicles with an average of over 900 deaths every year in the last five years. In December2022, the Jammu & Kashmir High Court had directed the government to constitute a committee of experts to ascertain reasons for repeated accidents in the region of Doda-Kishtwar. Where today’s accident took place. Despite this, no action has been taken by the government in this area where accidents are reported nearly every other day.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the incident.
